In a nutshell
Albums are at the center of your photo library's structure.
With Piwigo, you can sort your files into albums and sub-albums.
Any file must be located in at least one album. Albums allow you :
- to manage the way your content is displayed in your gallery
- to find a file easily, using a logical tree structure
- to manage the visibility of contents based on user profiles
Understanding the way albums work and being aware of the related options is therefore essential.
The tree structure of albums and sub-albums
The albums are organized in a tree structure, like the files in your computer.
The albums at the very top of the tree are called "Root albums". Sub-albums are sometimes called "Child albums".
An album can have an infinite number of sub-albums, which can have sub-albums themselves, and so on…
Example of a tree structure :
- Animals
- Mammals
- Felines
- Cats
- Tigers
- Lions
- Bovines
- Cows
- Buffalos
With the example above, in Piwigo's administration, the album “Buffalos” will most often be displayed in the form of "Animals / Bovines / Buffalos", which allows you to easily find your way around.
In your web gallery, Piwigo shows the list of albums at the root. If an album has sub-albums, you will view them by clicking on it, and so on. You can see an example of this in this demo gallery.
For each root album, the number of sub-albums it contains is shown.
If an album has no sub-albums, the number of photos is displayed. This way, when clicking on an album, you will either see its sub-album list, or access a list of photos directly.
